The message is a "New Year and New Beginning." In New York City, the ball drops in Times Square, in Australia, Sydney Harbor erupts in fireworks and in London, the crowd counts down to the chimes of Big Ben. It is exciting to welcome a New year and a fresh start.
In China fireworks were invented to ward off evil spirits and make a new season prosperous. New Year's resolutions date back to the Babylonians who made vows to appease their gods. Such acts were an attempt to make an unknown future secure. Babylonia was busy conquering others- including Israel. However, God sent the enslaved Jews this message: "Do not fear...When you pass through the waters, I will be with you."
No matter how exciting a new year and its celebrations bring, a new year can also bring anxiety and uncertainty. None of us knows what the future holds but let us choose to begin this new year with love and peace in our hearts towards all mankind while keeping our focus on God. Whatever we face in the new year, God will be with us.
Scripture verse: Isaiah 43:2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.
