This message is in memory of those lost to gun violence and those recently at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, TX. Also, in honor of all the teachers who daily sacrifice their lives, in many ways, because they love their students and education. Teachers see our potential even if we don't see it in ourselves. They encourage and help us to achieve our best, excel in education and prepare us to face the world outside. I am so grateful for all of Bella's amazing and loving teachers that she has had over the years and love you. Thank you to all teachers for making this world a better place.
The title of this devotion is "Baggage Activity" and I think that it is not only a beneficial exercise in school but also in the workplace. You never know what is going on in somebody else's life and everyone needs compassion.
Cindy, a middle school teacher, created an activity so that her students would be more understanding and compassionate towards one another. The "Baggage Activity" involves students writing down some of the emotional weight they carry. The notes are shared anonymously, giving the students insight into each other's hardships, often with a tearful response from the peers. The classroom has now been filled with a deeper sense of mutual respect among the young teens, who have more empathy and compassion towards one another.
Throughout the Bible, God has encouraged his people to treat one another with dignity, kindness and show empathy in their interaction with others (Romans 12:15). Even in one of the first books of the Bible, Leviticus, and in the early history of Israel, God pointed the Israelites toward compassion, especially as they dealt regularly with foreigners. God told them to "love them as themselves," because they had also been foreigners in Egypt and understood that hardship personally.
Sometimes the burdens we carry make us feel like foreigners, alone and misunderstood, even among our peers, family and friends. We may not have a similar experience to connect with as the Israelites did with the foreigners among them. However, we can treat those God places in our paths with the same respect and compassion that we desire. No matter if we are a student, teacher, parent, an employer, employee, spouse, friend, stranger or anything in between, we honor God through our actions in showing love towards others. Let's all have a heart like Jesus and show love and compassion to everyone!
Scripture verse: Mark 12:30-31 Love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: "Love your neighbor as yourself." There is no greater commandment than these.
Wishing you all many blessings!
In Peace and Love,
Brenda
